New Fabrics for Autumn Winter Collection 2012

Since the upcoming Penelope Red Autumn/Winter Collection will be inspired by Picasso artworks and Ballet Russe costumes, you can imagine that there will be a lot of decoration, embellishment and decadence! I can't wait!

The images included in this posting show some of the fabrics I am planning to use in this collection.

I have been very lucky to obtain quite a few vintage fabrics.

-Photo 1: a vintage organza with a squiggle lined texture, and a red wool blend
-Photo 2: a vintage 100% wool check, and a cream stretch lace
-Photo 3: a vintage pleated organza in black, and a silver, black, cream and brown jacquard.

The above photo shows two wool blended fabrics that I will be blending together to make a design- the colours look amazing together!

Above, shows a black and blue jacquard, and a vintage red fringed metallic fabric- this fabric will be a real challenge to use, but i am looking forward to seeing what I can come up with!

I will be using a collection of vintage buttons, that have been handed down to me from my husband's family. Most of these buttons have come from Russia, so they will fit nicely in this theme!

Below is a brand new lace which I just simply LOVE! It is such a statement and very dramatic- so I had to have it for this collection!

I can't wait to start designing the new designs! They will be gradually created over the Summer break, and I will try to post my work-in-progress photos as I go.

Picasso Exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW and my Inspiration for the Autumn/Winter Collection 2012

Last week I was in desperate need of some inspiration and motivation. My husband suggested that I visit the art gallery, and I remembered that there is a Picasso Exhibition on at the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney. It was the perfect excuse to go!

I have to admit, I have never really been a huge fan of Picasso, and if given the choice, I would much rather see an exhibition on antiques, ceramics or classical paintings, rather than most modern artists. This being said, I still enjoyed seeing this exhibition, and since then it has given me some ideas!!!

I personally really enjoyed the brighter paintings, e.g. "Portrait of Dora Maar" (image below), where Picasso used lots of yellow, purple, red, green, blue, and heavy black outlines.

It just so happened that the outfit I was wearing that day was in very similar colours to this painting- so I guess it was meant to be that I would like this one!

Another painting I really enjoyed was "Large still-life on a pedestal table". Again because of its bright colours.

I have been thinking about my upcoming Autumn Winter 2012 Collection, and I think a little Picasso inspiration will be just the thing to blend with my Ballet Russe inspiration! I could imagine a lot of assymetrical lines, bright colours against black, and geometric shapes as my Picasso influence. Then I would add ideas of embroidery, trims, fur, and some special Russian vintage buttons that I have collected to the mix. I can't wait!!!

The Red Flora Fashion Parade Video

I am very excited to show to you the video of the Red Flora Fashion Parade! The parade took place during one night only in September, and it was the very first ever of its kind for Penelope Red. I finally feel like my Penelope Red designs are going somewhere!

The video, created very kindly by David Tan-Lu, highlights the latest Spring and Summer designs from Penelope Red, however, because I make very limited edition designs of everything, I am currently creating more- as some of the designs in the parade have already sold out!

Featured design: The Red, White & Black Stripe Ingrid Top

I wanted to create a mini-range of designs to be more tran-seasonal, as the online shop caters for both North and Southern Hemispheres. This range will be called, "Modern Vintage", and the styles included will be exactly that... taking vintage silhouettes and ideas, and making them modern!

So announcing the first style to be included in this mini-range... The Red, White & Black Stripe Ingrid Top.

As soon as I saw this print, I imagined this style! I love that it is such a graphic print, full of character, and it has that "Cruise/Retro" feel to it.

The top features a boat neck at the front, a v-neck t the back- which can still be worn with a bra; a tulip overlapped sleeve; and it has been handmade from a polyester/elastane print.

I love it tucked in with a high waisted pair of pants or a skirt, but it would look equally as good with a pair of jeans!

I'm ba-ack!!! Yes, it has been a long while since I posted anything... perhaps these photos will explain why!

I recently held a fashion parade, in Sydney, to launch my latest Penelope Red range, The Red Flora Collection! What a night!!! Y'know when you have had a dream that you wanted to fulfil since you were really young, and when you finally have it fulfilled, you feel like crying? Well, there were a few tears shed by me that night, and I was amazed by the response that everyone had to the designs. It was such an exciting whirl-wind of a night!

The girls all dressed, made up and ready to go... my nerves were really heightened at this point in time!

We decorated the venue with candles, lanterns, tea lights, and flowers.

Introducing the lovely Olivia... Naomi Meyer was the make up artist for Olivia and Irina.

Lucy Topp Makeup created the make up for Deedee and Monique, as well as myself. I needed a little extra help that night, as my skin exploded throughout the course of the preparations.

Introducing Irina!

The Red Orchid Lace Dress was originally in the multi-coloured lace, but it has sold out. Now I have created it in another red lace and red knit. You can take a look at it in the online shop here.

The kimono that Irina, above, is wearing sold that very night. It was a one of a kind creation, hand made from two vintage fabrics and a vintage braid... beautiful!

Well, I had to say something... after I composed myself!

Olivia wears the Hibiscus Halter Neck Dress, handmade from a stunning 100% cotton print (and cotton lining). It is now available in the shop online.

After the parade, guests were invited to view the latest collection...

So many beautiful colours and fabrics!

A new design: A Penelope Red Pleated Wrap Knit Dress

A week ago, I was in a design slump... I wasn't feeling very creative after having spent so much time on the computer! I needed to get enthusiastic and excited again, and my hubby, being the supportive and encouraging guy that he is, suggested, "Remember that fabric I bought for you from San Francisco? Why don't you make something that is just for you?"

I had been thinking of a wrap around dress out of the printed silk jersey fabric he gave me, and the dress pictured in these photos is what I came up with!

It is such a stunning fabric, and the print suited the dress perfectly. The print was arranged in panels, so there was a border or stripe running across it every 90cm. I had to be very careful how I create the pattern, otherwise I would have a stripe running across my body in a very unflattering position!

So I used the stripes as contrast on the dress- a stripe going down the side front; ties that go around the waist; and the cuff on the sleeve. It also features pleats at the shoulder, on the front skirt panel and the centre back top panel.

My husband bought the jersey knit red floral printed fabric over a year ago, when he was in San Francisco. I had asked him to visit a shop that had FOUR floors of fabric, which I had found previously. He knows how to win my heart!

I think I might make a short sleeved version of this wrap around dress for Spring, in a red and contrast. I also hope to find a suitable print- as this dress is so beautiful in a print.

I wore this dress out for the first time on Saturday night, and it made me feel like a million dollars! I can't wait to wear it again!

Behind the scenes at The Red Flora Photo Shoot

Again, it has been a while since I last posted... I have been so busy creating a new collection of designs, and time just slips away!

So here are some snap shots from the behind the scenes of the latest photo shoot... and a few of the professional ones at the end.

We decided that curls, braids and flowers would go nicely with the clothing. To take a look at my inspiration for The Red Flora Collection, please look here.

I had this idea for a group shot, and it is always very hard to get what I have in my head, out into reality, but it worked!

We didn't realise during the middle of our shoot, that the children from the local school would be our backdrop! I think they had fun at least.

The idea was a sophisticated, Penelope Red picnic.

So from 8am til 3:30pm we fussed and worked our butts off- not to mention the numerous days of work I put in to create the designs.

Ms. Red Flashback part 8: photos of my previous work

This was the first ever professional photo shoot that featured my Penelope Red designs. It was so exciting to see my designs come alive in front of the camera, and it gave me the confidence to start dreaming BIG!

The designs featured in this collection are a part of "The Red Sun Collection", which can be found on the Penelope Red Website.

I am currently organising another shoot for the Spring/Summer Collection for 2011-2012, and it is nice to look back and see where the Penelope Red photo shoots started.

Kiran's Sari-Inspired Wedding Dress, Part 3: East meets West

A while ago, I started to design and create a wedding dress for my friend, Kiran. I now have some photos from the day to show you the finished dress!

Kiran and I both agreed that we wanted to include her Indian-Australian culture in this design, so as the name of this post implies, we mixed a little bit of east and west culture into the dress. I created a western style dress, using the eastern beaded sari and created an eastern influenced over skirt.

You can take a look at part 1 and part 2 of this dress, where you can see the making of, and how it all started. Also, I have now created videos of the making of this design, and you can view them on the Penelope Red youtube channel here. There are three parts to the video.

The wedding took place in Byron Bay, Australia.

I am so happy with how it turned out! I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful lady to wear this design, as I think Kiran looks perfect in it.

The back of the dress was going to be just as important as the front, since during the ceremony most people see this. I decided to create this interesting contrasting panel on the overskirt in pink, and make some really interesting shapes from it. There is beading all over the sari, a beaded trim at the back hem of the over skirt, and beading on the back of the dress, at the top.

I think it is almost safe to say that this is probably my most favourite design I have ever done so far, or at least in the top two or three. I have to admit, my tailored coats or winter dress do come very very close, but I can't help but love the decadence of this design!

If only I could find an excuse to make another one for myself!

Inspiration for the Penelope Red Spring Summer Collection 2011-2012

Every time I start a new collection, I like to think of a theme, or an inspiration that captures my imagination. For a long time I have been envisaging this idea in my head, and I really just can't wait to see it happen before my eyes when the photo shoot is taking place.

As I design, I first like to think about what the whole look and feel of the photo shoot will be about- I guess this is a starting point, and then I work backwards.

I also like to try and mix inspirations together, so I can come up with something original.

The first inspiration, picured above is of a painting by Eugene-Auguste Francois Deully. Unfortunately there is not a lot of information on the net about this artist, and even when I look up the painting, it has two separate names. I will go by the name of "The Flower Seller".

I liked "The Flower Seller" because it has many beautiful colours, it has a pretty scene, and I think it is a fun, optimistic painting- something that I want the photo shoot to be about.

My textile agent also happened to be selling a lot of floral fabrics, and I thought they would go perfectly with this inspiration.

The other inspiration so far is Marie Antoinette. I guess a lot of people will presume it is becuase I liked the movie of the same name, starring Kirsten Dunst. I agree that the costumes and scenery was amazing, but the actual movie itself was not my kind of film.

I guess I am more inspired by the colours, the decadence, and after visiting the place in which she grew up, in Austria, who wouldn't be inspired!?

So, I now need to take all of this inspiration, colours, ideas, fabrics, and make it into a modern Penelope Red collection! Not an easy task, but I am looking forward to the challenge!

City Snapshot: Berlin

I have been a little sick for the past few weeks- on and off. One of the reasons why this blog has not had many posts (the other reason is I have been too busy!). When you are sick there isn't too much to do but watch movies and read. Being a creative person, I find sitting and doing nothing really difficult, so I have a little more time now to blog...

I have been looking through some of my old photos recently, and I realised that I haven't finished doing my city snapshots. It is a fun excuse to look back at my travels and show you! So without further ado, here is my city snapshot of Berlin!

I visited Berlin over 6 years ago. This was around the same time I visited Paris, Rome, Vienna and Budapest on my own. So because of the time lapse, I can't tell you the names of the buildings or other landmarks, but I can tell you a little bit about the impression Berlin gave me.

Every time I have been to Germany, the locals have always been the friendliest I have ever met when travelling- and Berlin seemed to be no exception.

I can remember some of them mistook me for being one of them- which is always quite funny when they start speaking, and I reply in my Aussie accent, "Sprecken ze English?". This kind of happened to me all over Northern Europe.

They had loads of war memorials, "checkpoint Charlie" - where you once crossed from East to Western Europe, and loads of buildings where you could see the damage that bombs had made.

I thought it was really interesting how they had kept some of these bombed buildings- an old church, like the one pictured below- and created something new and exciting from it. Some of the old facade is still there, but from memory it had atleast three huge holes on the side where the bombs had hit it. The modern sky-scraper type building to the left is actually part of the church, and another part went through the middle of the church.

I guess it is a reminder of their past, but also a way of moving forward and looking to the future.

Berlin is very big city, with many suburbs. Some entirely modern, and others with buildings that probably hadn't changed for over 100 years- in Australian terms, that is a long time.

I was there in late March or early April, and the weather was perfect, as you can see. Much warmer compared to my first ever visit to Germany, in Frankfurt!

From memory, I quite enjoyed Berlin. It was easy to get around, clean, friendly people, great food, and full of a very interesting history and culture.

Obviously if you are a history buff, Berlin is one of the places you should go, but I think Berlin has much more to offer than just relics from the war. I think the modern parts of the city were very pretty (which is unusual for me to say- as I usually would say the older the better), or maybe its the ingenious way they have mixed their old and new together. Either way, if you were into architecture, perhaps Berlin would be a place for you to visit too.

The Making of Lorelle's Bright Blue and Black Wool Winter Coat

The weather has been very cold recently- perfect for making coats! Recently I had fun creating a bright blue and black coat for Lorelle. As you may have seen in some of my previous postings, I put a lot of effort and time into making my designs- this is what sets my designs apart from many other designers out there.

Since it is so hard to tell people how much work is involved in these coats, I thought I would show you...

I decided to give this coat something extra, by placing embroidery down the seam lines in black- to contrast the bright blue.

Each button hole takes many steps: working out where they will sit, making the piping, sewing the piping to the outside of the coat, clipping, hand stitching the piping down. Then once the coat is finished, I need to hand stitch the inside to the piping, to open up the button holes.

I place pockets in each coat, on the side seam.

Each Penelope Red coat has many layers; outer layer in wool, interfacing (above), interlining in cotton (below) then a silk lining.

Some of the design details: contrasting shaped panels, embroidery, and pleating and fur trims.

With so many layers, it is always important clip, notch, and trim all side seams.

Above, sewing the lining, and below shows how the embroidery is done- by my fantastic machine!

I do a lot of hand sewing in my coats- one of the reasons why they take so long to make, but it also means you are getting a truly unique and beautiful product. How many designers do you know have hand sewing in anything?

I hand sew all the seams flat, to make sure they sit flat and stay beautiful for a life time.

When the coat gets to this stage it really is exciting! Above, I am attaching the front outer side to the front inner side, which means I am almost finished!

...And the finished product! Lorelle was so excited that she had to wear it out straight away!

Ursula's Mint Green Bolero Jacket

I love it when a design comes together and I am reluctant to sell it- it means I am very happy with it! This bolero was a custom order for a lady in Germany, named Ursula. She tried on my Black Latin Bolero, but I had run out of fabric and couldn't make it in her size.

After a while, we both decided that this mint green wool/mohair would be a great option for the cropped jacket instead. I appliqued the cream lace onto the mint green fabric, just like I had done with the black latin bolero.

Little buttons and loops fasten the front which meets edge to edge.

I lined this bolero with cream silk satin, and green silk- I love these two fabrics together!

The lace has been applied to the sleeve aswell.

I received some feedback from Ursula yesterday:

"Thank u much !! It feels comfortable , fits perfect , looks wonderful!!! Keep the measurements!!
Thanks again. Your fan in Germany"

It is always nice to hear that my designs have reached their owners, and that they are enjoying them! It makes all the work worthwhile in the end and puts a smile on my face all day!

Outfit Time: Dinner with Friends on Thurday, 9th June

I can't help but want to wear this top, The Black and Cream Isis Blouse, and the skirt, the Nile Skirt, whenever I go out these days. It makes me feel very glamorous and yet is still quite a very comfortable outfit!

We were going out to dinner with friends on this night, and since I stay home all day working on my designs, I like to always get dressed up in my Penelope Red when I go out.

I love the sepia effect I did on the first photo- for some reason "the sepia effect" just called out to me when editing this shot. Pity about all the stuff going on in the background, but you get the idea! A little old fashioned meets modern fun!

The Making of Lorelle's Black and Purple Wool Jacket part 2

I must confess, this isn't really a "making of", but I wanted to show you the finished product to the last post, which was The Making of Lorelle's Black and Purple Coat.

So here it is. Doesn't Lorelle look great!? I love it how she paired it with a pair of black pants, but brightened it up with a blue mosaic printed bow tie blouse (the pants and the blouse are all Penelope Red too!).

The lady has style!

As you can see, the brocade is outlined throughout the jacket with piping in purple.

The jacket was made from a black wool twill (with a tiny bit of elastane for comfort), a vintage floral brocade in black, blue and purple, and fully lined with a purple silk.

It is so great to see this design being worn by its owner in such a fun way!

The Making of Lorelle's Black and Purple Wool Jacket

Recently I created a custom order for Lorelle. She wanted a black and Purple wool jacket in the shape of the Pallas Athene Wool Jacket style.

I thought it would be best to have less of the purple, and more of the black, since it would therefore be wearable for more seasons and be able to wear with more designs.

We chose a stunning blue, black and purple floral brocade to team with the black, then I added a purple satin piping in between the two main fabrics. This is the making of this custom order jacket...

Cutting the fabric out neatly and precisely!

As well as cutting the brocade- see how it shimmers in the light!

Creating the piping involves many steps- first cutting the fabric into bias strips, and sewing them together.

Attaching the interfacing to the wool pieces, and then I start to sew the pieces together.

Once the binding is one long strip, I then wrap it around the cord, and sew as clse to the cord as possible to create the piping.

Above, the piping has been inserted between the fabrics, and I need to clip and trim the layers so they all sit nicely.

The back body piece of the jacket is shown above, before I insert the brocade and piping.

Sewing the brocade to the black fabric with the piping in between- not as easy as it sounds!

Getting the sleeve ready to be attached.

Now I am starting to sew the lining pieces together.

Inside the sleeve and shoulder I place a shoulder pad, a sleeve head roll, and many pieces of interfacing, so they all must be neatly sewn and steamed.

Attaching the sleeve to the body of the jacket.

I decided that the jacket would look best with a little extra piping, so I did this along the neckline.

The jacket has been finished, and now I hope I can get a few extra shots of Lorelle wearing the coat, so I can show it off to all of you!

As you can see, there is lots of colour in my display- I wouldn't have it any other way!

And I think the big Penelope Red sign at the bottom, and the smaller one at the top finishes it nicely!

My Emerald Green and White Winter Coat came in handy in the afternoon. The photos above and below were taken on my way to the museum to see the King Tutankhamen exhibition. I was walking through this park, and the autumn leaves against the bright green grass were calling out to me, saying "photo moment!"

Through out the day, three people asked, "where did you get that coat from?"- so business cards were given out, and I told them a little about what I do.

I started to want to sell because every time I went out, people would ask about my designs, and ask that exact question (because even when I wasn't designing full time, I would still wear my own designs).

Above, I am standing inside the Design-A-Space shop, next to my designs. I am wearing one of my tailored winter dresses, which is a similar style to one of the dresses in stock at the shop.

New Penelope Red Swing Tags!

I have decided that it would be nice to add a swing tag to my designs. I wanted to let my customers know, as soon as they see my designs, that they are limited edition designs, and they have been made by hand with quality. So I hope these Penelope Red swing tags help to portray this!

I decided to attach them to the Penelope Red woven label in the back of my designs because I don't want the safety pin damaging the garment.

From now on, each garment will be numbered, to tell you how many garments will be the same as the one my customers have just purchased. For example, the Pallas Athene Jacket pictured in these photos, will have a swing tag stating:

"This is an original Penelope Red design. It is one of three that will be made worldwide."

I only have enough fabric in the check to make three of these jackets.

Just for fun: My outfit on Saturday 30th April

Last weekend, I attended a baby shower for one of my wonderful friends! The weather was finally not too miserable, and I was inspired to wear a dress, and brighten up the day!

So I wore my Black Rose Jade Dress, in a jersey knit fabric. This dress is super comfy, the bright jade green colour (almost aqua in some lights) is such a glamorous impacting colour, while also being a bit fun!

I decided to wear it with my black and white polka dotted peep toe shoes, instead of black boots- it would've been too heavy for the day.

Then I was inspired to wear something around my waist that helped to tie the shoes in- this scarf turned into a belt for me! It is a scarf I made, and includes colours of black, white, silver and peach. It si the first time I have worn it, and it is funny it was used in such a different way, but I really like this outfit, and will be wearing it again!

(The scarf looks great when you walk too- it glides in the air like a sash- a little bit glamorous, with a quirky edge)

A friend, who happens to be one of my best customers, had a short break in Port Macquarie over the Easter long weekend. She took her Penelope Red wardrobe with her, and was very thoughtful to have taken some photos to share with me and the world!

Just for fun: My outfit on Friday 29th April

I always find it difficult to dress very casually, while not looking horrible at the same time! I like to walk everywhere, and therefore, heels are not always the best option, but sometimes sneakers do not do a lot for an outfit.

So, last Friday, I came up with this outfit. It still has a little "Penelope Red excitement" to it, but not over the top, and I still wore my sneakers (or slip on type of sneaker things-not sure what you call them.

1. Penelope Red Venus Floral Bolero

2. A peach version with black lace version of the Black Chiffon Bow Tie Top. This is a one-of-a-kind design I created for myself!

3. Jeans by 18th Amendment. These jeans always receive compliments from people. I would recommend this brand!

The Pallas Athene Wool Jacket

The Penelope Red Pallas Athene Fluted Wool Jacket is yet another brand new style that I have created especially for The Red Queen Collection.

The first two photos are from The Red Queen Collection photo shoot, which we took in The Wine Odyssey Restaurant.

I decided that I wanted to have some fun with this outfit, while taking photos of others. I wanted to try the Pallas Athene Jacket, with the Yellow and Cream Anukis Skirt, and I guess you could say, "make it my own" outfit.

I think the hat gives this outfit a very "equestrian" look, which I don't mind. I am wearing the Cream Bow-tie Blouse underneath the jacket, tucked into the Anukis Skirt. I decided to add a pair of brown fishnets to the outfit, since my legs are very pale. Also, since my hat is black, I wore black pumps with it to balance out the black.

I designed this jacket to have the fluted "peplum" since I noticed when customers would try on a bolero, they didn't necessarily suit every shape. The bolero wouldn't flatter women with larger hips, or a very short body, or a wide waist.

The shape of this jacket covers the wider hips, accentuates the waist and the longer line is more flattering on most shapes.

The sleeves are three quarter, and they feature the Penelope Red trademark of the spliced contrasting fabrics.

The fabrics included in this style are a cream, brown, yellow and orange wool check; contrasted by a plain brown wool.

As you can tell, I really like to add some really interesting details, including contrasting fabrics, spliced and split panel lines, fully lined in bright orange silk lining, and a few hand stitched touches as well. You can see the making of this design on the blog here.

Colour palette inspiration

The image below I took to show you how I sometimes get my ideas for a Penelope Red colour palette. Sometimes it happens by accident, like in the photo. I just happened to place these fabrics in the box, and I realised how beautiful they look together. I love the contrast of the bright blue and bright yellow, the softness of the pale yellow, and somehow the metallic braid and brown binding marry it all together...

I find inspiration for colour palettes in sometimes the most un-likely places; a group of bobbin reels in different colours that happen to be sitting with each other; a book case with lots of different coloured books together; a group of markers that I have out on the table; sometimes a beautiful sunset. Anything with lots of colour!

I would love to one day be designing my own prints, so I can then use these colour palettes frequently. Until then, I will need to use the fabrics and prints that are available to me- which believe me, are inspiration enough!

New Vintage Fabrics

When people have seen my designs at The Rocks Markets, or when I am wearing my Penelope Red designs out, most will ask me the same question, "Where do you get your fabrics from?". I know that my interesting fabrics and prints is what sets me apart from a lot of the other designers out there, so while I won't give away all of my secrets, I will share something with you...

I come from a long line of dressmaker's, and now that my Aunt's are getting past the stage of wanting to sew, they have decided to pass on their collection of fabrics to me! It only means great news for me and for my Penelope Red designs.

I have always loved vintage fabrics and prints- and they add an exclusive touch to my designs as no one else will have that fabric. Even when in was in TAFE, studying fashion design, I would visit the local op-shops and vintage stores, and collect beautiful pieces of fabric. Vintage fabrics is part of the Penelope Red aesthetic now, and around 50% of my fabrics and trims are vintage- especially after the latest editions.

1. two cotton prints, and a beaded and sequinned trim.
2. printed linen, printed polyester and more beaded trims.
3. a black and blue jacquard and a printed cotton.

If you know anyone who likes to sew, you'll probably find out that we like to collect and hoard! Some people call it, "insulating the walls", other's call it, "fabric-holic". So when I meet a dressmaker who is giving up the trade, I always ask if they would like to sell their stash to me. The fabrics in the next image are from a recent "stash-buy". I love the printed wool (left), and the linen has come in handy (middle). The lace is probably my absolute favourite thing I acquired from this lady.

The fabrics above and below are from another aunt of mine, Aunt Patricia. All of these are cotton prints, and they will come in handy for the coming Spring/Summer- I can't wait to use them!

Outfit fun at The Rocks Markets!

One of the best parts about my work is that I get to meet many wonderful people while at The Rocks Markets. I have been very lucky to meet a few good friends since starting to sell there, and Leanne and her sister Lorelle, are two of them.

Leanne bought the Ikat Bolero (worn in the photo above) a few months ago, and wore it last weekend to show me how it looked on. I was so pleased with how it looked on her I had to take a photo. This bolero is a one-of-a-kind wool and jacquard cropped jacket, and I will be making more similar styles to this (in other fabrics) soon.

I always think that the art gallery or any museum is a chance to wear something a little special. I know most people will wear whatever they find on the day, but I kind of feel that the artworks or displays that I am going to see are very beautiful, and surrounded by beautiful buildings, and a lot of people have gone to a lot of trouble to make it this way. I believe that dressing up shows a little bit of respect to the effort and thought that has gone into making such a display... Also, how many chances do we get to dress up these days in Sydney? Not many!

So, when I viewed the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW on Monday, I decided to wear my new Black and Cream Isis Blouse, and my Red Flared Pants. The pants I am wearing are my own personal pair that I made just for me, but if you like this look, you could get a similar look by wearing the Cosmopolitan Red Flared Pants with large bow.

I love the painting above. It sits in the foyer of the art gallery, and has so many colours! I would love to use this as inspiration for a print one day- or maybe even use sections of it to inspire the colours for a collection.

The weather was beautiful on Monday- a perfect autumn day! This is taken from the doorstep of the art gallery looking into the domain at the city.

Me and my Penelope Red outfit, out the front of the Art Gallery of NSW. I recommend going to see the Archibald Prize exhibition if you get the chance. I am not an art expert, and I don't usually like modern art as much, but I like this exhibition because it is about Australian personalities, and Australian Art.

The Black and Purple Cairo Skirt

The Black Silk Emilie Blouse is worn with the Black and Purple Cairo Skirt in each of these photos. I really LOVE this outfit!

When creating the skirt, I decided to include two lines of embroidery that highlighted the centre front panel.

I wanted the embroidery in black to still have an eastern feel to it, so I used a more geometric design.

The Penelope Red Cairo Skirt has been handmade from a black linen and purple silk/cotton blend. The draped black body creates a feminine line, the contrasting T-bar in purple around the waist and centre front, makes an elegant impact.

This design is part of the Red Queen Collection, inspired by Gustav Klimt paintings and Ancient Egyptian Costume. The one-shoulder look of the Black Silk Emilie Blouse, and the pleating on the skirt, reminds me of something an Egyptian Queen would wear. The vintage metallic braid and black embroidery help to convey a feel of eastern design, but they also remind me of Gustav Klimt paintings as well.

After spending the morning taking loads of photos for the online shops of my designs, I had organised to meet a friend at a local sweets shop (my other weakness! 1st: fabric. 2nd: sweets!).

I really liked this outfit... this is about as casual as I like to go. If it isn't like this, then I am a complete train wreck in track suit pants and whatever top that isn't in the wash.

So, I liked this outfit so much that I wanted to share it with you.

I found these shoes in Nine West about a month ago. I wear them constantly now since they are so comfortable and easy to walk in.

The Oroton bag I fell in love with as soon as I saw it. I had always wanted a nice black bag that could hold a lot, but also a very classic style. I am not a fan of those big bunchy bags that resemble bowling bags. Smart, classic and sophisticated is my style, and therefore my bag!

When I met my friend, she asked me, "Penny, do you ever wear anything that isn't Penelope Red... besides jeans?", and I could confidently reply, "No!". I guess my designs for Penelope Red really is what I would like to wear- I design it because I love it myself.

So, I may start adding a few more outfits to this space!

The Paris Cowl Neck Top in Navy Blue and Red Jersey

I finally got my act together yesterday- I was inspired by the beautiful weather and thought it was a good opportunity to take the much needed photos of the latest Penelope Red designs.

Besides... it is a perfect excuse to get all dressed up, put on the make-up and feel glamorous even while being at home!

So, I can now introduce to you The Paris Cowl Neck Top, handmade from a jersey knit fabric in Navy Blue and Bright Red.

The style is based on the popular Pink Candy Stripe Cowl Neck Top, just in different colours.

I originally planned to add a random selection of white buttons to one side of the cowl, but people seem to like the top the way it already is, so I have left it. What do you think?

When taking the photos, I really like wearing it with the Olive Hathor pants- I know it isn't what you would assume would look great with it, but somehow it works! I like how the top tucked into the pants has a more vintage look to it, rather than worn with just a pair of jeans, but as they say... each to their own!

The red cowl neck on this style is quite dramatic and has a full drape, while the navy blue body creates a slim silhouette.

Whenever I design my styles, I always think about what would flatter the female shape the best. There are too many designers out there who seem to forget about flattering the female form, which I guess this is why I aspire to the old-fashioned designers, rather than to the new. They simply knew how to dress a lady back then!

I guess you could say my Paris Cowl Neck Top is yet another design that I have adapted from a vintage inspiration, and made it a modern design. Wear it with jeans and ballet flats for a modern and casual look; wear it with a high waisted skirt or one of my High Waisted Pencil Pants and heels for a vintage twist on a modern design!

The Penelope Red Asymetric Blue Sakhmet Blouse

On the weekend, at the Rocks Markets, I wore the new Asymmetric Blue Sakhmet Blouse, and I felt like a million dollars in it, so I thought I might share it with you. The above photos was taken of my friend, Lorelle and myself. I am wearing the Olive Green Hathor Pencil Pants with the blouse (which will be featured soon).

I am very happy with this design- it is very different to any thing I have ever created, but still is very me. The bright blue rayon twill is very soft to wear, and the vintage metallic braid in black, silver and gold accents the colour well. The above and below photos were taken backstage while the photo shoot for The Red Queen Collection took place.

The Sakhmet Blouse has been handmade while being cut on the bias- it moulds to your body shape, but it won't be tight.

The Rocks Markets held a fashion parade last weekend, to showcase each designers latest Autumn/Winter designs, and my Penelope Red designs were featured in it. The model above and below wears the Asymetric Blue Sakhmet Blouse and Black Hathor Pencil Pants.

When designing this blouse, I wanted to create a top that had only one shoulder, but I hated the idea of seeing the wearer hitch it up every 5 minutes because it would be slipping from the bust. So I developed this "idea" of a one-shoulder, using an optical illusion- because of the braid, your eye follows that line up to the sleeve, and you see the other shoulder last.

It is a Penelope Red version of a one-shoulder top, but also bra-friendly! This style will be made in Australian sizes 8 to 18, and it is available in both the Australian Dollar online shop, or the American Dollar online shop.

You may be wondering where the name "Sakhmet" comes from. I named it after the Egyptian Goddess Sakhmet- this name is often translated as the "Powerful One". She is depicted as a lion-headed woman, and is often known as the Goddess of War. She was also known as the "Red Lady" (fitting hey?).

All that Jazz Dress- a one of a kind design. Made from a stunning bright blue silk, sequinned lace and tassling. I guess I just wanted to try something different!

Another one of a kind design, handmade by myself, this time the Disco Nights black catsuit.

The Red, Black and White corset- the above photo is probably one of my favourites that my friend, Anna has taken of me. I think the corset, the angle, and the cloudy sky fits the mood perfectly.

Above, the Nouveau Silk Dress. I bought this fabric in Scotland, and I loved it!

Above, the Aqua Gathered Neck Blouse- such a versatile top, and very easy to wear.

When creating the above dress, I really really wanted to try something different! This dress is made from one continuous piece of fabric, pleated and shaped into a cowl necked dress.

The Disco Nights Catsuit has bust pieces in a contrasting sequinned and gold stretch fabric, as well as a random applique of this fabric that sits under the bust.

My Little Dream

This morning I had a strange but good dream...

I dreamt I was still in college, and I was still living in the mountains (where I lived when I was in college, with my parents) and I had a range to design and complete for the end of year. Then suddenly, I had another one to complete or I would fail my whole three years of study. I was panicking!

So I had two ranges (or collections) I needed to complete, and I needed to catch the train into the city, to find fabric and trims for all designs in each range. I went to the local train station, and I kept on missing the trains...

then I woke up. I realised, "oh thank goodness I am not in college any more!". Then I realised, "I don't HAVE TO design any ranges any more." I design my ranges because I LOVE doing it, and you know what the best feel was? Waking up just that little bit further and realising I have a whole room of fabric and trims just waiting to be used!

I guess this dream couldn't have come at a better time really. I was feeling extremely worn out, and a little disenchanted, but the relief of waking up and realising that I get to create my designs when I want to, rather than when I have to has made me so happy!

So I am back into thinking of some new ideas, and I actually woke up at 5:30am because I was so happy!

So this posting will have no pictures today... I promise the next posting will. I don't usually write something quite so personal on here, but I guess it fits.

Wishing all other designers, artists and business people out there a dream that will help to inspire them!

Ms. Red Flashback part 6: photos of my previous work

A few years ago, a friend asked me to create the bridesmaid dresses for her wedding. She wanted black, and the fabric that she chose suited the look and the girls perfectly. There was a little scalloped edge on the fabric, but it would've been wasted by leaving it on the hem, and since the the neckline was curved, I had to think of something else. So I cut the scalloped edge off from the hem, then appliqued it on around the neckline.

Each dress had around 30 glass buttons at the back, and a lace up corset on the inside to secure the dress in place. The strapless corset dress always suits so many different shapes, and is such a classic look.

It is hard to believe now that it was 3 years ago! I think the bride and groom must've only just celebrated their anniversary, so congratulations to Al and Al!

Below, Marie and I at the wedding reception. I am wearing a pink, mint, and cream vest I made- which I still wear now (and I received comments from 2 complete strangers two nights ago when I wore it to the opera).

Behind the scenes: Raisa's beautiful hats for the Penelope Red Autumn Photo Shoot

Everyone who knows me well (or perhaps who has followed this blog) would notice that I LOVE my hats! Hats have this way of making every outfit look finished, polished and a little bit over the top in one. Most people would not like the idea of looking over the top- but I love that extra glamour hit.

Last year I discovered a little Russian-Australian lady, Raisa, selling these divine handmade hats at The Rocks Markets- not too far from where my market stand was. I instantly fell in love with Raisa's craftsmanship, and with her passion for what she does. It isn't very often that I come across a fellow designer at the markets, who actually creates most or everything herself, like I do, so it was nice to get to know Raisa.

When I organised the Penelope Red Queen Collection photo shoot for Autumn, I didn't initially think of hats to be included in it, since it was going to be taken in doors. Since Raisa's hats are more like fascinators, and more a decoration rather than a full brimmed hat, they worked perfectly for the setting. Besides, I wanted everything to be glamorous, fun, and a little over the top!

These photos are not the finished professional photos, but they were taken to show you the hats we used. All of the Penelope Red designs that the models are wearing will be added to the Penelope Red website soon!

The Rocks Markets has organised another Fashion Showcase, and the next one, on the 2nd and 3rd of April will feature my Autumn designs, The Red Queen Collection.

Each day is split into 4 parades; the first is always children's wear at midday; the women's wear parade's are on throughout the afternoon at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. At this stage I have not been able to confirm the particular time that the Penelope Red section is on, so I suggest to everyone to head into the city for the middle of the day.

My Melbourne Adventure

My husband gave me a trip to Melbourne for my birthday! We arrived in Melbourne bright and early on Friday, and headed straight to the cafe's for breakfast.

The above photo is of me in our hotel room- we stayed at the Windsor Hotel- a very old fashioned hotel (which I love)!

We had dinner on Friday night in St.Kilda, in a great restaurant named, Rococco. I would recommend ordering the dips and bread- freshly baked foccacia bread- I almost ate the whole thing!

I wore my Paris Bow Dress to dinner.

I had always wanted to do a French Cooking Course, so my hubbie booked one for me to take while I was in Melbourne! Some of the recipes I learnt...

short crust pastry, made into a Leek and Onion Tart...

and a beautiful chocolate souffle! We tried many more recipes, including a Coq au Vin, which I happened to cook last night for dinner!

I had a lovely time in Melbourne shopping and eating!

Creating the new Autumn Collection Part 5: The Olive Silk and Antique Lace Mermaids Dress

Once upon a time, a young TAFE fashion student (me!) stumbled across a vintage and retro store. Inside that store were many pieces of beautiful lace and fabrics, although none were as beautiful as one piece of lace.

This lace was so delicate, so fine; the label read: Antique 1930's lace. She bought it knowing that one day, when the time is right, this lace will become something beautiful!

Fast forward more than 10 years later, and I have finally used this lace!

Each time I thought about using this lace, I chickened out of it- I didn't want to create something from it that I wasn't going to be happy with. I am very proud to show you my Olive Silk and Antique Lace Mermaids Dress- and here is the step by step creation of this dress...

Above, starting to sew the olive green silk together to make the outer layer. I added interfacing to the bust and shoulder area, to make the pieces sit well around the body.

Below, I have added a tape around the neckline and sleeves to prevent stretching. In this design I cut the selvedge of the fabric off, and use this as tape- doing this will make the seam thickness less.

Above and below, where needed, the seams are trimmed and clipped to help the seam sit flat.

Sewing the lining together. The lining is 100% silk too.

The centre back has an invisible zip. I always like to make sure the seams match at each junction- sometimes very tricky when using a zip, but worth the fuss!

Above and below, the dress before the lace has been attached.

Above and below, I had to position the brown antique lace carefully around the bodice, using lots of pins, and clipping the lace away gradually. I am not an expert on deciding how old fabrics and laces are, so I can only guess how old this lace is judging from the label it had on it (when I bought the piece over 10 years ago), but I can tell you that it is very delicate, very fine, and they don't make lace like this these days!

Just pinning the lace around the bodice takes a lot of time; making sure that the lace is flat and not puckering the olive silk. I decide to follow the design lines of the dress, and have less lace at the back.

I have enough lace to create about 4 of these dresses. Perhaps I may run out of olive green silk (as it is a vintage fabric as well), but a beautiful cream or ivory would look perfect with this lace too!

The photo shoot for the Penelope Red Autumn Collection took place on Monday. The photos in this post are not the professional photos, but shots that my friend, Melissa, and I took as the day progressed.

Above: Lucy wears the Spinx Orange Blouse with the Olive Hathor Pencil Pants. Vintage jewellery.

The fabulous Cleopatra inspired make up was created by Lucy Topp, and the Gustav Klimt inspired hair was styled by Chris Lau.

We were very lucky that The Wine Odyssey, the Rocks, Sydney, were kind enough to open their doors to us. The Wine Odyssey's back drop was the perfect setting for my Gustav Klimt and Egyptian costume inspired designs.

Ms. Red Flashback Part 4: an old Penelope Red postcard

I have always said I am not the best illustrator, but when I try, I can do it. The above postcard started off as a lead pencil drawing, A3 size, of a woman wearing a corset. I then coloured it in in black marker. Once it was photographed, I loaded it into adobe illustrator, and created the hard black line- to make it look like a comic.

I had only just learnt how to use Illustrator and I wanted to experiment! So this postcard is one of the designs I created. I did this about three years ago. The postcards for Penelope Red have changed, but I still like this one as well.

I had a little bit of time last weekend I was at the Rocks Markets, and I took some photos of my latest designs and colours for Autumn...

Above I am sewing buttons on a dress- I always like to take a little bit of hand sewing with me.

My latest colours: black and gold, cream, purple, and blue, with a little jade green.

Also, I can't forget my favourite colour- RED!

I will be featuring each of these designs on the blog in more detail soon, but for now, this is just a sneak peek of the latest designs, and there will be more to come!

Creating the new Autumn Collection Part 4: The Assymetric Black Silk Emilie Blouse

One of the very latest Penelope Red designs has been handmade from a black silk, and a stunning vintage metallic braid. Above you can see me cutting the silk out. I decided to create this design on the bias- so the fabric moulds and falls around the body.

The neckline is assymetrical. When I think of Egyptian costumes, for some reason a one shoulder number jumps out at me. I wanted to create a blouse that had a one-shoulder feel to it, but you could still easily wear a bra with. The metallic braid has that eastern look, and a little Klimt included as well! The colours in the braid are very bright, and they include: purple, bright blue, gold, and brown.

Above I am sewing the braid onto the silk. The photos truly do not do the braid any justice... it looks ten times better in real life.

And here are a few snap shots of the blouse- not professional photos, but at least the show you the idea. I am very happy with this blouse... very different to anything I have created before, but still very elegant!

This blouse looks great tucked into a high waisted pair of pants too! (more on those at a later stage!)

My visit to the Ballet Russes Exhibition in Canberra

Last weekend I visited Canberra, to see the stunning Ballet Russes costume exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia. I was certainly not disappointed!

So many beautiful masterpieces in one exhibition and so very inspiring. Anyone who knows me well will know that I love over the top decadence! I love lots of colours and textures mixed into the one design, I love metallics and sequins and embroidery and lace... just thinking about it all makes me want to get back in that sewing room and sew sew sew!

I was surprised to see so much detail and work in each of the costumes- since I would have thought they would be seen from far away on a stage, and no one would see the craftsmanship.

It was hard to imagine how many people would have created each piece, and how many hours it would have taken to make it, let alone all of the restoration involved. Most of the designs are around 80 to 100 years old, so they had been badly damaged- they even had a few still to be restored pieces on display to show you the difference.

I have been considering to design a Winter Collection, inspired by a Russian- Australian theme, as this is my family culture. Now I am very excited to start it- but first I need to finish the Autumn collection!!!

Now these designs have encouraged me to explore even more mixes of colours, textures and embellishments in my designs!

I encourage anyone who loves design; loves colour; loves anything over-the-top, and wants to be inspired; to visit this collection. There have been some fantastic exhibitions in Australia recently, and out of the ones I have seen, I include the Ballet Russes exhibition.

My other favourite exhibitions: Valentino in Brisbane; Islamic Art in Sydney; and Monet in Sydney.

We decided to make a whole weekend of the visit to Canberra. We visited two markets (one on each day), the Handmade Market on Saturday, and the Old Bus Depot Markets. We also discovered this beautiful restaurant, Flint. We both had the French Onion Soup (to die for!!!), and I had the duck... YUM!

Basically, I couldn't ask for more from a weekend!

Penelope Red at The Rocks Market: 26th & 27th February 2011

The Penelope Red boutique stand will be at the Rocks Markets on the 26th and 27th of February, 2011.

The photos included in this post were taken a few weeks ago when I had my stand set up at the Rocks Markets. It was fairly quiet, so I decided t0 continue hand sewing the gold sequinned silk top I am creating for the new Autumn Collection.

I love giving my garments that handmade appeal, and even though hand sewing sequinned lace onto a top is time consuming, I know this design will be stunning! Already people were wanting to take a look at the unfinished piece, let alone the finished piece. I can't wait to see this in the photo shoot!

The Rocks Markets, Sydney is open from 10am til 5pm, both Saturday and Sunday. Please note that the Penelope Red boutique is not at the markets every week, and if you take a look at the official Penelope Red website, there is a notice of the next time I am there.

The following designs were photographed by my good friend and I a few years ago. We had lots of fun taking photos, creating the look, and playing around with the jewellery. All of these photos were taken in my home.

This is where my designs really started to evolve, I believe. I started to drift away from the corsets, and started experimenting with adding the contrasting panels into other designs.

A few days ago, I added some photos of my work from previous years (part 1). I had a few positive comments from a some friends and customers, so I thought I might continue to add more "Ms. Red Flashbacks".

Above, the model wears the Summer Brights Corset and Bright Green Flared Pants.

I always loved creating flared pants and corsets, but the Be My Baby Dress above was a completely new style for me when it came out. A very 60's inspired style, and since the waist line finished just under the bust, it made the wearer's legs long very long!

More Photos of the Red and Navy Paris Bow Dress

I added the latest Penelope Red design to the etsy shop today, the Red and Navy Paris Bow Dress.

I believe, when buying online, it is always nice to have as many photos as possible of the design/product, so I have added a few more to this blog posting.

The Paris Bow Dress has been handmade from rayon elastane jersey knit fabric in two beautiful colours, a bright red and a navy blue. The rayon (viscose) makes it very comfortable and soft, the elastane helps it to hold its shape and creates such a beautiful drape.

The large red bow at the bust and colouring makes people think its a little bit French, and a little bit nautical. I wore my own copy of this design on the weekend, and many comments were made about the French feel to this design.

The Paris Bow Dress is based on a mixture of two of my most popular designs; the Paris Bow Top (below) and the Black Rose Red Dress (above).

I love having a full skirt, and a nipped in waist, so I made the dress to have 6 pleats on front waist, 6 pleats on back waist, and one large pleat at centre front under the bow. The pleats accentuate the waist, and fall out to reveal a full skirt at hem.

This dress is perfect to just slip on over your head (no zip or fastening), put on some red lipstick, grab a pair of red shoes and your favourite summer hat, and you are ready to go!

Another great aspect of this dress is that you can easily dress it up with a cute heel, some jewellery and a clutch bag and wear it to a party.

In December I featured a posting about creating a pink and black one-shouldered corset dress. It was a custom order for a lady who wanted to wear it to a wedding. Lorelle's sister, Leanne, had already purchased the Penelope Red Silver Floral Corset Dress, and I designed the pink one-shoulder dress specifically for Lorelle.

Well, I now have some lovely photos from the wedding day, of the ladies wearing their Penelope Red!

The following photos are of designs I created a few years back. I think it is fun to look back and see how much my designs have evolved, how much the photo shoot process has changed, and remember the happy customers who bought these designs.

Around Paddington Markets, I was known for my corsets and catsuits. I have always loved wearing both styles and when I first decided to sell my designs I wanted to sell items that no one else was making. I wanted show stoppers!

The various Penelope Red corsets have made it many different countries by now: Germany, England, France, Brasil, America, Canada, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and more.

The Penelope Red catsuits are a little more exclusive, so not many have been made. The Bright Swirls Catsuit (RHS) has been taken back to to Tokyo, and I simply had to keep one of these catsuits so the Pocahontas Catsuit (LHS) is mine, and I still receive comments on it whenever I wear it even now- 4 years later.

The White corset was very popular- one of my best corsets. I sold 4 copies of this in the one day!

The Carmen corset was all about having lots of fun, and experimenting with fabrics. They were quite a hit!

It is crazy to think that I have handmade so many pieces over the years! There will be more Penelope Red flashbacks to follow.

Creating the new Autumn Collection Part 3: A New Jacket Style

The very latest Penelope Red design is a new jacket style. This style is completely different to all of my other jackets and coats, having a fitted bust and waist area, centre front meets edge to edge, 3/4 sleeve with contrasting detail, and a full flared hip with contrasting detail. The jacket hem will sit around your hips.

I have tken a few photos and wanted to share them with you...

When I create the Penelope Red wool coats and jackets, I use interfacing instead of fusing. It is a much better product, it creates a higher quality finish, and I feel it looks better too. You can see the interfacing in the next two pictures.

I always like to use contrasting lining- it is more exciting that way! Above, I am sewing the lining together.

When I create wool coats and jackets, I always make sure I clip and trim the seam allowances- this creates a much better quality finish.

Above, you can see the inside of the jacket as I am sewing the hooks and eyes onto the centre front.

This jacket has been made from a brown, cream, yellow and orange wool boucle for the main fabric, a brown wool twill for the contrasting and orange silk for the lining.

I haven't even named this design yet! I am currently in the middle of organising the photo shoot for the Autumn collection, where this jacket will take centre stage- so really looking forward to this range coming together!

Cocktails in Orbit Lounge- Summit Restaurant

A friend and I decided to go out in the city one Friday night recently. We are over scrabbling for a seat at most bars, and wanted a more sophisticated setting, and my friend suggested the Orbit Lounge in Australia Square's Summit Restaurant... possibly the best view in Sydney, and they have an extensive cocktail list! Perfect!

I also couldn't help myself, and decided I needed this dessert as well- and I certainly wasn't disappointed!

I am wearing one of my favourite outfits at the moment... The Vesper Kimono and the White Russian Mini Skirt. Every time I wear this outfit, I feel so colourful and bright, and a little sexy- I love it! It always receives many comments... and you can imagine since my friend was wearing gorgeous vintage bright orange dress, we both stood out from the crowd (which is what I love)! Every one else looked very boring in their black suits!

Introducing an exciting competition to start off 2011!

I decided to hold this competition because as I was creating the latest Autumn 2011 competition, I started to question what I should name it... and I couldn't think of anything!

Since I have a network of Penelope Red supporters, and I had been thinking of holding a competition for a while, I thought this was the perfect opportunity!

I need help naming the new Autumn Collection, and in return, the winner will be given ONE of the following new Penelope Red tops:

The Black and White Zebra Alexander Blouse (above) or the Adele Multi-coloured Halter Top (below- and it was featured in the blog posting before this one).

Details of the Competition:
Aim: To name the new Penelope Red Autumn Collection for 2011.

Hints: Keep in mind the theme of it being a Gustav Klimt and Egyptian Costume inspired range. I also like to try to have either "Penelope" or "Red" included in the name. To keep the website with the same theme, the name should be something like: "The ......Collection"

The Adele Multi-Coloured Halter Top

Yesterday I added the latest design to the Penelope Red Australian Dollar Online Shop (bigcartel), the Adele Multi-coloured Halter Top.

This halter top has been handmade from a beautiful bright and soft cotton fabric in deep jewel colours of plum, cream, grey, blue, green, lime, aqua, red, brown. It is a 100% polished cotton.

This is part of the latest Penelope Red Autumn 2011 Collection.

I think it is important to have as many photos as possible when selling online, as people can't see a 3-d item in front of them, so they need the photos to create an image in their head... so here they are!

All of my halter tops, including this one, are fully lined. You can wear this with or without a strapless bra. In the photos shown, a strapless bra is being worn.

Creating the new Autumn Collection Part 2: The Judith Dress

Introducing the latest Penelope Red design... The Black and Gold Stripe Judith Dress. I am very proud of this design- the fabric is perfect in this style as it drapes beautifully, and the black and gold metallic stripes contrast well witht he black textured stripe.

This style mixes the Penelope Red Blue Skies Skirt and the White, Orange and Black Pop Dress together- two styles that I love, and I wanted to do more with.

This style is fully lined, has an invisible zip at centre back, exaggerated waist as the hips are quite full, a neck that curves around at the back, and a square neckline which I find is flattering on a lot of people.

The metallic sheen gives this dress a sophisticated and different edge to the design, but the dark colour and comfort of the dress means that you can wear this to the office.

Creating the new Autumn Collection Part 1

One of the latest designs for the Autumn 2011 Collection has finally been started! This collection has been inspired by Gustav Klimt paintings and Egyptian costume, and when designing this I took the gold and black contrasting idea from the 'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer1", along with the extravagant use of shapes and metallic paints.

The shape of this style is virtually the same as the Deco Sequinned Blouse. I wanted to use a very simple shape, since the gold sequinned lace is really the "show-stopper" in this design!

The photos in this post are just a few photos that I have taken as I have been creating it. In the above and below photo I am pinning the gold sequinned lace in place over the black satin. This is quite a time-consuming step, as you need to make sure you don't cut into the motif too much, and also make sure it sits nicely around the silhouette.

Today I wanted to just write a little quick note to wish everyone who reads this blog a very Happy New Year. I hope you achieve many of the things you would like to do this year, and perhaps even a few of the things you didn't think were possible! Let's also try not to forget a little down-time is always needed... I know there are too many of us out there, myself included!

I have added a few personal photos of me and my family, friends and home town, Sydney- some of my favourites that I have taken in the past year...

My nephews, niece, sister and I had a little picnic in Centennial Park, and they were dying to have a go on these car-bikes. Little did we know when we agreed to it that they were really hard work pushing it around!

The kids again at Neilson Park on Christmas Day 2010 (just over a week ago already!).

The Penelope Red Vesper Kimono

The Aqua and Black Vesper Kimono has been handmade from a 100% cotton print. This fabric is so beautiful and soft, with such a vibrant print- most people assume it is silk until I tell them that it is actually cotton!

I pleat the back panels, so you don't need to arrange it in a particular way- it is done for you. This is another surprise that people seem to love- because it is very hard to see this when it is hanging on the rack.

It is always nice to have a few extra photos of my designs- plus I love wearing my creations, so any excuse will do!

I like to wear the Penelope Red Vesper Kimono with a dark pair of jeans and heels for a more smart casual look...

... and I think it looks pretty HOT with a Penelope Red mini skirt. I wasn't sure if I could tuck it in and make it look good, but I am actually very happy with how it looks tucked it! I think because the kimono is quite a full in silhouette design, this actually makes my waist appear smaller- and let's face it, that is always a good thing!

The skirt I am wearing with it is my very latest design, and it is made from two cotton elastane prints. I haven't even named it yet!

A lot of people would probably say my choice and mix of prints is a little out there- but I love mixing up different textures and prints. It is my trademark. If you are not a brave as me, perhaps a black, blue, or red skirt would be just as lovely. I always say, "Your wardrobe is limited only to your imagination!"

Lorelle's Pink and Black One Shoulder Corset Dress

During this week, I finished hand making a custom order for one of my dear customer's, Lorelle.

Lorelle and her sister Leanne, wanted one of my corset dresses each to wear to a family wedding in January 2011. Leanne instantly loved the Silver Floral Corset Dress, and coincidentally the size 10 fitted her perfectly.

Lorelle originally wanted a corset dress like the Black Citrus Corset Dress, but since Leanne was already wearing the same shape, I suggested that I design on especially for her!

The dress itself has 3 layers: outer fabric (either Pink cotton/elastane print, or black ribbed poly blend), fusing then bright pink lining.

I am very lucky that I have wonderful customers who return and tell me how much they love their Penelope Red purchases, and quite often they are wearing my design when I see them!

Every person wears Penelope Red in their own individual way, and it is a great way to show others what can be done with my designs.
