The Penelope Red Tailored Winter Dresses

I finally have made more of my Penelope Red Tailored Winter Dresses. This new design is made from three different fabrics; the black is a textured 100% wool jacquard, the check is black and ivory- a vintage wool I have had for a while, the third fabric is a beautiful white/ivory silk that my Aunt gave to me- they all look so beautiful and striking in this design!

I will be placing more photos of this dress on the blog, including perhaps making a video of the making of this dress. We'll see if I have the time!

For now, I have included in this post a few variations of the same idea. These are all my Winter Tailored Dresses. The designs have used either a very similar pattern, or the exact same pattern- all being created in completely different fabrics.

This was a custom order. We picked out the fabrics together- doesn't the blue look so lovely against her skin tone!

Above, I have used a gorgeous antique yellow lace, made from wool. This is one of my personal dresses, and I love wearing it to special events and functions as it is so different- a real head turner! I wore this again, just over a month ago to a musical.

Above is the Silk Road Winter Tailored Dress, made from three very distinct fabrics. This is available to purchase at the Rocks Markets.

I last wore this dress (yes, this is another of my personal winter dresses!) to the city, when I visited the Art Gallery. Four complete strangers commented on my dress- always a sign that it is a good design!

I wore the Black and Cream Winter Dress to a wedding this past weekend, and it was a definite hit! I love this dress! It is so stylish, but so pretty.

My photos from The Winter Fashion Showcase

I finally have a photo of the new Penelope Red Dress, because it was featured in the Winter Fashion Showcase, at The Rocks Markets this past weekend, the 17th and 18th of April, 2010.

The below photos were taken using just my little digital camera, and I will hopefully soon have a few more photos from the day.

Above is the Penelope Red Black Rose Red Dress. Below is the Penelope Red Silk Road Winter Dress.

I am aiming to complete a short film of the parade, but I shot it via portrait and not landscape orientation, so once I work out how to rotate it, then it will be done!

New Designs on the Penelope Red Website

Pictured above, one of the latest Penelope Red styles: The Ikat Gold Mini Skirt

I am excited to share with you my very latest designs!

In the past few months, I have been slowly unravelling my latest inspirations, designs, and how they are made. This is a small, more exclusive collection, as they are all made using very individual fabrics, most are one-off's, and they have been created using more 'couture' techniques.

I have also updated the Penelope Red website gallery, as I was hoping that this format would be easier to browse through.

In this post I have placed one photo of each of the new designs featured on the website, as well as the link to the blog entry I did on each (look at this if you want to see the"making of")...

These styles will be available in my Etsy store soon.

The Penelope Red Black and Lace Winter Dress: Making of

I wanted to share with you the making of my Penelope Red Black and Lace Winter Dress. I wore this dress to the Tessuti Awards, and I was so proud of it! It is an amazing feeling to be able to wear something that you have hand-crafted yourself!

I love sewing, and sometimes it is nice to make something that is just for me! It means I can be as creative and spontaneous as I want, and I only have to satisfy myself!

I bought the fabric from the Tessuti fabrics store in Surry Hills. The plain black fabric is a 100% wool crepe. The cream and black fabric is 100% wool too, so I made sure I steamed both fabrics, to prevent shrinkage.

Next, I carefully cut out each piece. I had only just enough of the black and cream fabric, so I was very lucky. I always like to use a rotary cutter and cutting mats. It means a much more accurate cut, and it is actually much easier on your hands. The brand I would recommend is Olfa. They last a lot longer than the rest.

In my more expensive and exclusive garments I like to use interfacing, rather than fusing. It is a more time consuming process, but worth it in the end. So I cut out the interfacing separately, then apply each piece to the back of the main fabric, fastening it with stitching.

After the seams have been stitched, it is important to trim your layers of seams to reduce bulk. So I always trim the interfacing seams away as much as possible. I clip and notch wherever it is needed, then press. Every seam is treated this way.

This dress is relatively easy enough to sew, it just has a few tricky areas. The hardest is the centre front peak under the bust. It has to be 100% centred and even on both sides. I find the best way to do this is to place a line of stitching on both pieces of fabric, to outline exactly where the stitching needs to go.

Above is the inside of the centre front, and you can see all of the clips and notches!

The dress is completely lined with black silk lining, encasing all seams in between the layers.

Once I had the dress constructed, I hand appliquéd the lace around the neck line. I first of all pinned the lace in place (above), and then hand stitched with a needle and thread around each medallion. I watched "Pride and Prejudice", (the BBC version of course!) while sewing the lace by hand. I next clipped off any excess threads and pieces of lace.

So my dress was done! I am so happy with it.

I found some really cute black and white vintage buttons, to add just a little finishing touch to the sleeves, and at the top of the back neck. I then placed a little piece of the lace to the sleeve, right next to the button.

The lace was also purchased from Tessuti fabrics, in their Surry Hills store, and it really is just simply stunning! It came on a big roll, like any normal fabric, and I just bought 10cm worth (so I got one long line of flowers).

There is nothing like a nice new dress to revitalise and freshen up your day! I can't wait to wear it again!

The Penelope Red Scribble Winter Dress

I have recently added this new design, the Penelope Red Scribble Winter Dress, to my Etsy shop. I wanted to show you a few more photos, since Etsy only allows five, and it really doesn't allow for all of the detail.

We created the photos with the model, Olga, in Martin Place, Sydney. Olga is very beautiful, but very tall! On me, the hem of this dress sits just below the knee, and the sleeve sits just below my elbow.

The square neckline is a very flattering shape, and towards the back it is slightly shaped to hug around the base of your neck.

I always like to add a little contrast and definition with my silhouettes, and the black fabric creates a very hourglass shape around the waist, while the black shoulders means that your eyes travel up the body, and you focus on the shoulders, rather than the hips.

There is a split at the centre back.

The dress is fully lined, and all of the seams are encased in between the lining and outer fabric. (note: the silver bar going across the above photo is just the coat hanger)

This style is great style for the office, and then you can also wear it out after work. Both fabrics are a cotton/elastane, which means that the fabric is very comfortable to wear, and the stretch also prevents creasing.

I call it "scribble" as the print, to me, looks like someone went and scribbled paint onto the fabric. I guess you could say it is a messy modern stripe!

This style is easy to wear, sophisticated, elegant, and feminine. Something that you would be able to wear for years to come, not just for the one season. This is what I try to think about, whenever I am designing a new style. I want my customers to be able to wear and love my designs for many years, and still look chic!... I guess this is why I don't follow the trends; I make my own!

I have already listed a US size 6 (AU size 10), in the Penelope Red Etsy store. There will be more sizes to follow. If you would like to enquire about a size for you, please email me at: designer@penelopered.com.au
